General - British Empire

20885, , 1840-1928 THE IMPERIAL ALBUM 1840 to Mid 1928 Volume 1, 3rd Edition for THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE, Egypt and Iraq, commencing GB from 1840. Remarkable blue clothbound album still capable of continuation but tired in places, mixed mint / used well filled in areas and relative strength in GB, British Africa with COGH triangles range including forgeries, BNA, Australasia, BWI, India + States, some British Med and Malay, colonies - for example Mauritius well filled from circa 1860 excluding obvious earlies, generally short on high values as expected but the collection still pleasantly surprises, almost the more one looks the more one finds, the album being the life-long work of one collector whose descendants hoped the album would bring continued pleasure to another collector. Such intact collections are seldom offered. High catalogue value should run into tens and tens of thousands, condition being mixed but obvious defective stamps apart (it seems the collector could not bear to reject a missing stamp) providing a sound nucleus for development with scope for finds, watermarks, postmarks, varieties etc., the collection provides the aspiring collector with a 'jump-start' into the classic BE arena which is precisely where the market is heading, some stamps have been moved about, but the collection is offered intact. We estimate approximately 4,000 mainly all different stamps. (1 Imperial Album can be shipped anywhere worldwide, please enquire) Verbal describer reports /description / photos may also be available, please enquire., £9000

Great Britain - QV (line engraved)

21174, 2, 1840 Entire bearing 1d black S-I, plate 1b, exceptional 4 even large margin'd example tied by well defined red MC written, signed and sent from Collingwood House, Hawhurst, Kent by Sir John Herschel the famous astronomer, and son of astronomer Sir Fredrich Wilhelm Herschel who discovered Uranus, and lived there from about 1840 until his death in 1871. According to http://www.thesoul-space.com/the-space/collingwood-history he had 12 children. Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, named seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus. He made many contributions to the science of photography, and investigated colour blindnesss and the chemical power of ultrviolet rays. Herschel also had a keen botanical interest and planted beautiful specimen trees and scented azaleas here, some of which still survive. The entire is addressed to The Revd. G Jeans Tetney near Grimsby Lincoln who may be researchable upon the internet. Letter refers Revd. Jeans to the Proprieters of ? Cyclopedia as 'I retain no property in the work' etc and refers back to 1831, finally mentioning sorry for the delayed response as the original letter went to Slough ? and he no longer resides there. Worth further research ? - the entire being remarkable in that facially it is not creased or folded and bears an exceptional high quality plate 1b 1d black, some reverse aging / damage but all strikes to reverse present with unclear straight line Hawkhurst mileage, Lamberhurst green OC 6 1840 cds, red-brown OC 7 1840 cds. Malaya - Negri Sembilan

21338, 39, 1935-41 UNISSUED 8c scarlet horiz pair unused without gum, believed to be unique, these stamps were delivered but not issued before the Japanese Occupation. Before his demise the owner (a respected Malaya specialist) then stated that he had known of no other unoverprinted examples up to 2010. The Collector found the pair and purchased it in a small stamp shop, long since gone, on the south coast of England (it being his practice to visit a stamp shop wherever he travelled - and he travelled a lot). In fact he actually turned some old leaves and the pair was on the extreme edge of the page so that his thumb was on top of it till he noticed. Of fine appearance unused without gum, this extraordinary item was discovered unnoticed in 1992. See footnote after SG 39 which states that the existence of this stamp is known and attributed to 'leakage' - whatever that may mean 70 years later.
