Black, plate 1a intense black shade horizontal strip of 4 letters P-I, P-J, P-K, P-L …lightly cancelled red maltese cross tied to original wrapper transit: DONCASTER FE 9 1841 to Bromley Common fine red receiving cancels wrapper flap will open to display on one album page illustratimg all transits. Google internet research immediately locates: George Warde Norman (1793 - 1882) Born 30 Sep 1793 in Bromley Common, Kent, England Died 1882 at about age 88 in Bromley, Kent, England. (Apparently a writer on finance) … we suspect there may be more to research. The wrapper must have included something more substantial to require a strip of x 4 1d. Blacks. Thw strip itself is interesting … almost complete 4 margin - 3 being good to large margins and absent filing crease. We suspect the strip has been lifted at some stage perhaps to test removal / reduction of red maltese cross cancels with P-I & P-L good to huge margins. Further research justified. What is the connection between Doncaster and George Warde Norman? Intense black strips of 4 (re-married to original wrapper) must be exceptionally rare. Bearing in mind that a 1d. Black block of 4 off cover catalogues £18,000 we would respectfully suggest that this strip on wrapper may command similar catalogue value. Research could not locate a similar standard entire/wrapper for sale. Consequently, whoever acquires this valuable wrapper may continue research as part of the story. Obviously UNIQUE. | 103 | 8957 | Great Britain - QV (line engraved) | 8 Var PL118 | 1841 QV 1d. Red-brown Plate 118. Superb unused bottom left-hand corner marginal imperforate imprimatur lettered T-A, showing part inscription and plate number '118'. Gibbons retail card accompanies, priced at £6,000=. The significance of an imprimatur in stamp collecting is the very first sheet of stamps printed from a new, approved printing plate. Derived from the Latin word for 'let it be printed', these sheets serve as official physical records and colour proofs before a stamp is printed for public service. Typically imprimaturs realise between £500 to £1,000. Gibbons SG specialised 1st edition - November 2020 prices imprimaturs from £900 (pp155). By their nature all imprimaturs are unique, however the top-left, and in this instance the bottom left (S.W.) position letters T-A (Page 224 details stamps removed from the imprimatur sheet includes T-A PL118) bear the proving Plate number, and marginal inscription. Naturally, proving plate examples are unique and potentially x 10 to x 20 times rarer. Accordingly Gibbons, not unreasonably priced this rare piece (Ex. Clark collection 1946) at £6,000. What price today. Rare. Unique (Provenance Clark. SG. UPA) {MH} US0 | 3000 GBP | ![]() |

I'm not going to say too much about this collection because, I think the 218 images should tell the story. Although I cannot recall seeing anything that specifically reveals the originator … to my mind this collection was painstakingly put together, card by card, by a British War Veteran, possibly disabled. The clues are there, and perhaps more to be deduced … The addresses vary, just how was the collection put together. Then there's the strong patriotic messages, copious articles/clippings/images on the reverse of the cards … Generally fine to very fine. As you know the 1925 is the much better/scarcer Wembley Series, and these are popular amongst the 'Exhibitions' collecting fraternity … I think I worked it out at something like £11.50 a card at the full GBP£3,750= starting price … but I may be wrong. Worth checking for even though £3,750= is a lot of money … this does not feel expensive … View ALL 218 images (2 Volumes) HEAVY/OVERSIZE LOT - OVERSEAS SHIPPING SURCHARGE APPLIES.
